History of the Company

Mechanical engineering at MÁV – a company operated as a joint stock company from 1993 on – became a task of the Specialised Directorate of Mechanical Engineering. This field included tasks related to the rolling stock of MÁV (locomotives, multiple units, passenger wagons, freight wagons), as well as the maintenance of these vehicles. The Specialised Directorate of Mechanical Engineering consisted of the following organisational units: Locomotive Service Division, Passenger Wagon Division, Freight Wagon Division and Asset Management Division.

As of 2003, the Specialised Directorate of Mechanical Engineering was transformed into the Mechanical Engineering Division, with the following structure: Traction Service Main Department, Maintenance Main Department and Controlling Main Department.

Again in 2003, duties related to freight trains were transferred to the Forwarding Division and those related to passenger wagons and multiple units were transferred to the Passenger Transport Division. However, maintenance of the above-mentioned assets, as well as traction and shunting performed by locomotives, was still carried out by the Mechanical Engineering Division.

During this period, 21 regional Mechanical Engineering Departments organised engineering tasks. These were the following: Budapest-Ferencváros, Budapest-East, Budapest-North, Székesfehérvár, Celldömölk, Szombathely, Zalaegerszeg, Nagykanizsa, Pécs, Dombóvár, Szeged, Szentes, Békéscsaba, Debrecen, Nyíregyháza, Záhony, Szolnok, Hatvan, Balassagyarmat, Vésztő and Miskolc. From July 2003 however, at the level of implementation, Regional Engineering Centres were formed (Budapest, Szombathely, Pécs, Szeged, Debrecen and Miskolc).

As of July 2005, the Regional Engineering Centres evolved into nine District Vehicle Maintenance Centres (Budapest-Ferencváros, Budapest-East, Székesfehérvár, Szombathely, Dombóvár, Szeged, Debrecen, Miskolc and Szolnok). Likewise centres performing traction and shunting, called Regional Traction Service Centres, were also set up (Budapest, Szombathely, Szeged, Pécs, Miskolc and Debrecen).

In 2003, in parallel with an overhaul in the other divisions of MÁV, the drafting of plans for outsourcing the Mechanical Engineering Division also commenced. This process was given a strong momentum in September 2007. It was at this time that the Board of MÁV decided to establish MÁV-TRAKCIÓ Co. (and MÁV-GÉPÉSZET Co.,) and to organise it as an independent company. This streamlining of profiles allowed for a decoupling of traction and maintenance activities.

MÁV-TRAKCIÓ Co. continues to perform tasks of the Traction Service Main Department and the Regional Traction Service Centres, supplementing these tasks with performance and organisation of duties arising from the ownership and use of locomotives (e.g. ordering maintenance, arranging renovations etc.).

The pre-company of the new association was founded on 10th. October 2007, with an original stock of 20 million HUF. The new company was incorporated by the Companies Court on 24th. October 2007 under the name “MÁV-TRAKCIÓ Railway Traction Private Company Limited by Shares”.

MÁV-TRAKCIÓ Co. took over all the employees who had been performing traction-related tasks at the parent company. Thus a total of approximately 5,100 employees, dealing with the organisation, implementation and control of locomotive driving and traction activities were transferred to the newly independent traction company.

MÁV-TRAKCIÓ Co. currently carries out its duties by means of approximately 900 locomotives, well placed to satisfy the most diverse demands for traction services, continuously performing high-level services for clients and partners.
